Periodontal Maintenance

Periodontal maintenance is designed to prevent periodontal disease in your gums and bones. This therapy is often needed for people who are prone to getting periodontal disease or gum disease. These maintenance visits will help patients who are suffering from periodontal disease and the problems that come along with it. The disease can be quite uncomfortable, so the earlier we catch it, the less discomfort you will have. Also, the earlier we catch it, the easier (and less expensive) treating it is!

Why is maintenance needed?
The plaque that builds up on your teeth is filled with bacteria, which give off toxins that will attack your gums and teeth. Also, the plaque on your teeth will continue to build up and get hard, forming calculus.

Even if you are dedicated to the health of your mouth, it is hard to completely prevent the buildup of plaque and calculus. Good brushing and flossing will help, but regular maintenance will remove what you have missed. After cleaning your teeth well, we will look for any additional problems.

How often do I need to schedule my maintenance visit?
It all depends on the health of your mouth, so your periodontist will let you know when to schedule your next appointment.

The frequency of visits depends how bad your disease is, how often you have been coming, and how well you have done after your maintenance visits. It also depends on how quickly plaque and calculus build up on your teeth. How well you take care of your teeth at home is the most important factor. The better you do at home, the less often you will have to come in.
